Settle into the Swahili Coast: Three Days in Kilwa

3 nights · Dorm Bed · Full board · From $230pp (non-resident)

Kilwa Kisiwani visit & Sunset cruise, Songo Mnara visit & snorkelling

Kilwa opens up over three nights. There’s time to settle into the place itself — the coastline, the town, and the history that runs through both.

You’ll spend time on and around the Indian Ocean — beaches, mangroves, and slower stretches on the water — alongside visits to Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara, once major trading cities along the Swahili coast. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with coral-stone ruins still standing, spread out and largely untouched.

The days are paced out. One afternoon across to Kilwa Kisiwani, walking the ruins before heading back by boat as evening sets in. Another day further out to Songo Mnara, followed by time in the water — a lagoon stop, a swim, and a slower cruise back along the coast.

Back at The Slow, it’s fresh seafood, Swahili cooking, and a table that tends to fill up.

It’s a few days to take in Kilwa properly — on land, on the water, and in between.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kilwa & Coastal Relaxation

12:00 PM – Arrive in Kilwa in time for a relaxed lunch.

01:00 PM – Check in and settle into your room. Spend the afternoon by the water — a swim, the beach, or a hammock.

Afternoon – Walk the beach, visit the nearby fishing village, or wander into Kilwa Masoko town.

07:30 PM – Dinner, family-style — fresh seafood, proper Swahili cooking, and a good table.

09:00 PM – Overnight at The Slow, with the ocean not far off.

Day 2: Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins & Sunset on the Water

Morning - Breakfast at The Slow. Take your time – take a swim, grab a hammock, or wander the beach.

1:00 PM – Lunch at The Slow.

3:00 PM – Head out by boat to Kilwa Kisiwani after the peak heat of the day has died down. Once one of the most important trading cities on the Swahili coast, it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll walk through mosques, palaces, and coral-stone structures with your guide, getting a sense of how it all once was.

Sunset – Head back by boat at sunset, with the light settling over the water.

07:30 PM – Dinner at The Slow.

09:00 PM – Overnight. Get some rest for a big day on the water tomorrow.

Day 3: Songo Mnara Ruins & Lagoon Snorkelling

07:00 AM – Breakfast at The Slow.

10:00 AM – Head out for a full day exploring the historic island of Songo Mnara. This well-preserved archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the Swahili trading world, with coral-stone houses, mosques, and courtyards scattered among palm trees.

After the ruins, continue by boat to a natural tidal lagoon — shallow water, sand underfoot, and a place you’ll stay for a while.

Midday – Picnic lunch here.

Spend the afternoon in and around the water — swimming, snorkelling or just staying put before heading back later in the day. Keep an eye on the water throughout — dolphins pass through here, and there’s plenty of birdlife along the coast.

Afternoon –  Make your way back along the coastline, taking your time on the return.

7:30 PM – Final seafood dinner at The Slow.

9:00 PM – Overnight by the ocean.

Day 4: Departure

8:00 AM – Breakfast, then a slow start back to Dar es Salaam.
